An Ansar member was shot dead by a colleague while on duty at a garment factory in Bhaluka upazila of Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district on Monday evening, police said.

The victim, identified as 40-year-old Bajendra Biswas, was posted along with other Ansar personnel at Sultana Sweaters Limited in the Mehrabari area.

He was critically injured when a shotgun went off during an interaction with fellow Ansar member Noman Mia, who has since been arrested.

According to police and local sources, around 20 Ansar members were deployed at the factory at the time of the incident, which occurred at approximately 6.30 pm.

Bajendra Biswas and Noman Mia were reportedly seated together inside a room when the firearm discharged, hitting Biswas in the left thigh and causing severe bleeding.

Colleagues immediately rushed the injured man to the Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

An eyewitness, APC Md Azahar Ali, who was also on duty at the factory, told investigators that there was no visible argument between the two before the shooting.

He alleged that Noman Mia pressed the shotgun against Biswas’s thigh, made a remark, and then fired before fleeing the scene.

Police launched an operation soon after and arrested the accused Ansar member. Md Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) of Mymensingh district, said a detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the firing.

The body of the deceased has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination, and legal proceedings are underway.

Confirming the incident, Monindra Nath, Acting Secretary General of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Unity Council, said the organisation was closely following the case.
