Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political outfit — the “America Party” — aiming to disrupt the long-standing two-party system in the United States.
The declaration follows a sharp public fallout with U.S. President Donald Trump, ending their once-close political alliance.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the announcement on Saturday via a post on his social media platform, X, stating: “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
In a follow-up post, he accused both major parties of fostering a corrupt political culture, saying, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.”
Musk, who until recently was the largest individual donor to Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign, had been serving as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration.
Their relationship soured after Musk publicly criticized a major tax and spending bill backed by Trump — legislation he claimed would dramatically increase the federal deficit.
The bill, which passed narrowly through Congress this week, became a flashpoint in the escalating rift between the two figures.
The idea of launching a new party first surfaced during Musk’s falling out with Trump last month, when he polled X users on whether the country needed a third political alternative.
Referencing that poll on Saturday, Musk said, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party — and you shall have it!”
Despite the fanfare, the new party has yet to be formally registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
According to CNN, no FEC filings reflecting the creation of the America Party have been submitted as of this weekend.

Musk has shared few concrete details about the new party’s platform but has hinted at a fiscally conservative agenda focused on curbing government spending.
He said the America Party would debut its political activity during the upcoming midterm elections, backing candidates in select House and Senate races.
Meanwhile, the fallout has sparked retaliation from Trump, who this week suggested the government may reevaluate its significant contracts with Musk’s companies.
Trump also took a swipe at Musk’s former federal agency, saying the Department of Government Efficiency “may go back and eat Elon.”
