Curfew reimposed in Nepal’s Bara district after clashes; at least 10 injured

Fresh unrest erupted in Nepal’s Bara district on Thursday, prompting authorities to reimpose a daytime curfew after clashes between Gen Z demonstrators and supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), led by ousted prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli.

At least 10 people, including police personnel, were injured, according to officials and local media reports.

Tensions flared in Simara Chowk when Gen Z youths returned to the streets, accusing police of failing to arrest individuals named in complaints filed after Wednesday’s confrontation with CPN-UML cadres.

Crowds began gathering from late morning, and the district administration imposed a curfew from 1 pm to 8 pm in an attempt to prevent further violence.

However, the order failed to deter demonstrators, who continued marching and clashed with security forces. Police fired tear gas and warning shots in the air as protesters pressed forward despite the restrictions.

Khabarhub reported that six police personnel were injured in stone-pelting, while four Gen Z protesters also sustained injuries.

In a separate incident in Simara Bazaar, demonstrators set fire to a local police beat.

They also removed and burnt items from the CPN-UML office, accusing authorities of hesitating to arrest party cadres involved in the earlier clashes.

Tensions first broke out on Wednesday after word spread that CPN-UML general secretary Shankar Pokharel and youth leader Mahesh Basnet were travelling to Simara to address an anti-government rally.
Gen Z activists gathered at the airport to oppose their visit, leading to violent clashes with UML supporters and the initial imposition of curfew.

Two CPN-UML ward chairpersons — Dhan Bahadur Shrestha and Kaimoddin Ansari — have since been arrested on charges of assaulting protesters, police said.

The CPN-UML has been staging nationwide protests demanding the reinstatement of the House of Representatives, which was dissolved on September 12 following a sweeping Gen Z movement that toppled the Oli-led government.

Gen Z activists continue to call for accountability over alleged killings of demonstrators during protests on September 9 and over actions taken by the previous administration, including a proposed social media ban.
