Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League staged a flash procession on Sunday in Khulna city, despite the interim government’s orders against such processions.

This protest came a day after Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury warned law enforcers to face action if they fail to prevent Awami League processions.

Organized by the Khulna District Unit of the Bangladesh Awami League, the rally marked the first demonstration of its kind in the area since the Awami League government’s fall last year.

During the procession, the protesters displayed a banner with portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina, according to a report in the country’s leading daily, Prothom Alo.

The slogans such as, “Sheikh Hasina, we are not afraid, we have not left the streets,” “Sheikh Hasina’s government, needed again and again,” and “Sheikh Hasina will return like a hero” were raised, said the report.

According to Khairul Bashar, the Officer-in-Charge of the Horintana police station under the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), Awami League members arrived in a vehicle, staged a flash procession, and then quickly departed.

“Since it happened early in the morning, the streets were relatively empty. Police are actively working to identify and detain those involved,” he added.
