Kohima: Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton on Tuesday flagged under-reporting of crimes as a major challenge for law enforcement in the state, stressing that effective policing hinges on active public cooperation and timely reporting of offences.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating a new Superintendent of Police office building and police barracks in Wokha district, Patton, who also holds the Home and Border Affairs portfolio, urged citizens to report crimes without fear or hesitation.
He said prompt registration of complaints is critical for delivering justice, ensuring effective policing and enabling better deployment of resources.
“When crimes go unreported, it distorts the assessment of the law and order situation and weakens future planning and development of police services,” the deputy chief minister said.
Patton said the new infrastructure marks a significant step towards strengthening policing in the district and would help improve efficiency while boosting the morale of police personnel.
He congratulated the Wokha district police for completing the facilities and reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining a free, fair and strictly merit-based police recruitment process.

He emphasised that effective use of the new facilities, sound administration and stronger trust between the police and the public were essential for improving the law and order situation in the state.
The programme was attended by senior police officers and representatives of civil society, according to an official release.
