KOHIMA: Hundreds of people gathered for a peaceful public rally organised by the Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO) to protest the alleged murder of a personal assistant of Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, at Phoolbari Junction on Monday.
The rally that saw leaders of various organisations delivering solidarity messages, was reportedly peaceful, the district administration said.
Participants, especially from Angami dominated areas, carried placards demanding justice and respect for elders, among other issues.
The rally prompted Kohima town areas to come to a standstill, with shops closing and vehicles on the highway halting in solidarity.
Speeches were delivered by leaders including Neitolie Khrietuo Peseyie, President of WAYO; Kepelhoutuo Chüsi, President of Western Angami Public Organisation; Metekhrielie Mejura, President of Southern Angami Youth Organisation; and several others.
The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner’s office expressing anguish over the murder of Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou (52) and demanding justice.
They called for the immediate arrest of the two culprits, booking them under all relevant sections of the law, and ensuring no bail under any circumstances.
On May 18, two youth, identified as Neizosetuo Kire (24) and Khrietsonyü Whuorie (25), both wrestlers from a village in Kohima, brutally assaulted Miasalhou following what is believed to be a violent road rage incident in Kohima.
Miasalhou succumbed to injuries on May 19, sparking outrage and calls for swift justice.
Currently, the two accused are in police custody and a criminal case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code at the North Police Station, Kohima.
The protesters also warned against any attempts to bail out the accused, holding them responsible for any adverse consequences.
The WAYO stressed on the importance of treating the case with utmost seriousness to ensure timely delivery of justice.
