Kohima: More than 2,000 Catholic youths from across the Northeastern states are set to converge in Kohima for the 5th Regional Catholic Youth Convention, slated to take place from June 27 to 30 at the newly renovated Mary Help of Christians Cathedral.
Organized by the North Eastern Regional Youth Commission in collaboration with the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (NERYC–ICYM NE), the four-day event, themed “Pilgrims of Hope,” will be hosted by the Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement (NCYM).
Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima and chief patron of the youth movement, emphasized the unity and diversity of the Catholic Church in the region, which comprises 15 dioceses under three archdioceses, serving over 1.5 million Catholics.
Father Kokto Kurien, Youth Director of the Diocese of Kohima, expects a strong representation from all dioceses in the region.
The convention will commence on June 27 with a procession, flag hoisting, blessings of diocesan stalls, and a holy mass. Cultural performances showcasing the vibrant tribal heritage of the Northeast will follow.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and state ministers will grace the inaugural function on June 28.
Prominent Church leaders attending the event include Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong, Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati, and Bishop Linus Neli, Chairman of NERYC.
The convention will feature sessions on faith, leadership, social media, and youth empowerment, as well as discussions on critical issues such as substance abuse among the youth.

Eminent personalities like former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, Nagaland Youth Resources and Sports Director Kethosituo Sekhose, and Transport Commissioner Elias Lotha are expected to interact with the youth, inspiring them to build a brighter future.
The convention underscores the Church’s commitment to nurturing faith, leadership, and community among young Catholics in Northeast India, fostering a spirit of hope and unity.
