KOHIMA: In response to numerous public complaints and concerns from civil society organisations, the Union Territory (UT) of NSCN (IM) has mandated the immediate closure of all nightclubs, pubs, and discos in Dimapur.
The directive aims to address issues related to late-night operations and associated immoral activities within its jurisdiction that covers the former undivided Dimapur district.
Solomon Sumi, Secretary of the UT NSCN (IM), issued a statement on Tuesday highlighting reports of “underage girls seen late at night in unusual circumstances” and allegations of “various immoral activities involving married men and non-local businessmen for cash.”
The decision follows a series of complaints from the general public and various civil society organisations about these establishments operating late into the early morning hours, the statement further added.
The UT administration has taken these concerns seriously and acted swiftly to curb such activities.
In addition to the ban on nightclubs and pubs, the UT office has issued a stern warning against drug peddling and the distribution of banned substances within its jurisdiction.
Sumi noted a significant increase in drug use among young Naga youth, attributing this rise to the easy availability of drugs.
The NSCN (IM) UT officials have pledged to take stringent action against anyone caught selling banned substances or drugs.
Furthermore, the UT office has instructed its staff to keep the office informed about any immoral activities within the jurisdiction.
The office warned that any untoward incidents involving UT members would be dealt with strictly.
In March, Nagaland’s Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, had highlighted that addressing the drug menace demands collective action beyond law enforcement alone.
He had urged citizens to actively participate by reporting any sale or distribution of narcotics, drugs, or Indian-made foreign liquor.
This vital information can be shared anonymously with the nearest police station or the Narcotic Police Station in Nagaland using the ‘MADEIN’ mobile application, he had informed.
