Kohima: The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has called off its indefinite statewide business shutdown following what it claims is a written assurance from the state government addressing its demands.

The protest, initiated on May 19, had affected business operations across nine districts, including Dimapur, Chumoukedima, Niuland, Peren, Wokha, Zunheboto, Phek, Tseminyu, and Meluri.

The CNCCI’s primary demand was the nomination of representatives from the District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) to the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in these districts.

The trade body had previously suspended a similar shutdown in April after receiving verbal assurances from the government.

However, the lack of tangible action led to the resumption of the protest.

During a press conference in Dimapur, CNCCI president Dr. Hekugha Muru announced the suspension of the shutdown, expressing that the protest had been the “most satisfying” and “the best day of his life,” as it highlighted the business community’s concerns.

He emphasized that the government’s written assurance, promising to address the inclusion of DCCI representatives in ULBs, was a positive step forward.

However, an official from the Municipal Affairs Department has stated that no such written assurance has been issued to the CNCCI.

This discrepancy raises questions about the communication between the trade body and the government.

The CNCCI has expressed its intention to keep the details of the written assurance confidential for now. The trade body has also urged the public not to misinterpret its actions, reaffirming that the goal was a democratic and inclusive solution for all stakeholders.

The government has yet to publicly comment on the matter.
