Guwahati: Tragedy struck on Saturday afternoon when three young people reportedly drowned in the Dikhu River, just a few meters upstream of the Longleng-Changtongya bridge.

The victims, aged between 19 and 22, were part of a picnic group from PWD Ward in Changtongya town, located within Mokokchung district.

Sources indicated that the makeshift boat they were using capsized while they attempted to cross the river.

The incident occurred around 12:30 pm, as the trio, eager for an adventure, ventured into the river for rafting.

Despite efforts by nearby individuals to rescue them, the youths were swept away before help could arrive.

By evening, local villagers managed to recover the bodies of the three victims.

The deceased have been identified as Ajidong (21), Imtimeren (22), and Imnatila (19).
