Kohima: Nagaland is poised to make a significant stride in its football landscape with the launch of the highly-anticipated Nagaland Super League (NSL) in 2024.
This was announced during a recent governing body meeting chaired by Neibu Sekhose, the president of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) and All India Football Federation Executive Member.
The Governing Body Meeting (GBM) of the NSL was held to discuss the framework and launch of the league.
The inaugural season of the NSL will feature a total of eight franchise teams, a major milestone for local football.
To attract potential franchise owners, the governing body has revealed plans to issue Letters of Interest and advertisements shortly. Detailed criteria for franchise ownership will also be made public to ensure transparency in the selection process.
To facilitate the smooth operation of the league, several committees have been formed to oversee logistical, technical, and promotional aspects. The governing body, comprising nine members, has reiterated its commitment to promoting football excellence in Nagaland.
The NSL aims to provide a competitive platform for local footballers, fostering the growth of the sport while celebrating Nagaland’s rich football heritage.
The Nagaland Football Association has urged sports enthusiasts and capable patrons to explore franchise ownership opportunities.
The meeting followed the announcement by Nagaland Chief Minister Niephiu Rio to establish a professional football league in the state during the inauguration of the 23rd Dr T Ao Inter-District Championships Trophy in Tuensang on September 17.
Sekhose expressed gratitude to the chief minister and the state government for their unwavering support in making the dream of a professional football league in Nagaland a reality.
“We are committed to creating a platform that will elevate football in Nagaland and provide a stage for our local talent to shine on a national and international level,” he said.
