Tension eased in Moava village in Nagaland’s Chümoukedima district, with authorities confirming that the situation remained under control on Saturday as no fresh incidents were reported.

As per reports, tight security has also been put in place following the violence.

Notably, a long-running land dispute turned violent in Maova village, leaving at least 27 people injured, including a government official and a police constable, and causing extensive damage to houses, vehicles and public property.

The clash broke out in the Medziphema sub-division of Chümoukedima district, where tensions over contested land ownership have been simmering for years.

The Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO), the apex body of traditional landholders, had earlier issued a notice to the village headman in December, directing the removal of what it described as illegal constructions. The organisation claimed that construction continued despite the warning.

Speaking to the media, Moava Village Council chairman Sutminlal Vaiphei stated that steps are being taken to address the matter through dialogue and mutual understanding. He clarified that the violence stemmed from a dispute over a specific plot of land, and there was no attempt to obstruct developmental activities.

He added that the council was not officially informed about the CPO visit and learned only through informal sources that more than 1,000 people were approaching the village.

Police officials have appealed residents to maintain peace, refrain from spreading rumours, and cooperate with authorities to ensure prevent any recurrence of violence.
