Kohima: The Nagaland Police on Saturday issued a public advisory warning that anti-national and hostile forces may exploit the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, to spread false propaganda aimed at destabilizing peace and communal harmony in the country, including the Northeast.
Citing credible intelligence inputs, the advisory noted that efforts are underway by inimical forces to use social media platforms—such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X—to disseminate misinformation and manipulate public sentiment.
It also flagged the increasing use of advanced tools, including artificial intelligence, to craft convincing false narratives.
“Several of these misleading posts originate from accounts operated from across the border, particularly by agents in Pakistan,” the advisory stated.
“Such content is often reshared unknowingly by the public, contributing to the spread of divisive and harmful material.”
The police expressed concern that new, fake social media accounts may emerge in the coming days with the intention of inciting emotional reactions and fuelling unrest among communities.
Citizens were urged to verify information before believing or sharing it online.
“Do not circulate or forward any unverified content that could disturb the peace in the state,” the advisory read, emphasising that such actions are not only socially harmful but also criminal offences punishable under the law.
In a similar move, Tripura Police on Friday also cautioned against the spread of provocative or misleading messages on social media platforms.

In a post on its official X handle, the department warned that those found creating or sharing such content would face strict legal consequences.
“Citizens are requested to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activity that may threaten public peace and security,” Tripura Police added in its statement.
