KOHIMA: The Nagaland Police have seized a staggering 33 kg of contraband over the past three weeks and have arrested nine individuals, including two women, in connection with the seizure.
The haul includes 2 kg of heroin and a significant 31 kg of opium, valued at over Rs 15 crore 82 lakhs 41 thousand.
The details of successful crackdown were unveiled through a post on the Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma’s social media page late on May 24.
While specifics regarding the locations, methods, and timings of the operations were not disclosed, the DGP’s office confirmed the registration of four cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
Investigations into the seized drugs revealed intricate trafficking routes with connections spanning inter-state and international boundaries, linking Nagaland to Assam, Punjab, Manipur, and Myanmar.
Notably, the opium consignment was destined for Amritsar and Tarn Taran in Punjab via road, the statement revealed.
Another consignment, identified as “Shanflower” or brown sugar, was en route to Lahe, Myanmar, passing through Kohima, Dimapur, Mon, and Lungwa.
The origin of this shipment was traced to Senapati, resulting in the arrest of four individuals, including four Myanmar nationals.
In a bid to further combat drug-related crimes, the Nagaland Police issued a public appeal, urging citizens to report any instances of narcotic drug sales to the nearest police station or through the ‘MADEIN’ mobile app, assuring the confidentiality of informants.
The recent drug bust has earned praise from Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, who lauded the police force’s continuous efforts in curbing drug trafficking.
Taking to social media, he highlighted the significance of such operations in ensuring Nagaland remains inhospitable to drug traffickers and peddlers.
“This crackdown is a continuation of numerous other successful operations where kingpins have been arrested and huge drug hauls have been seized. Our police force has sent a clear message that Nagaland will not be a safe haven for drug traffickers and peddlers…” he wrote in a series of posts.
