Kohima: The aggrieved Nagaland Police personnel, whose appointments were quashed by the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench in September last year, staged a peaceful rally outside the Police Headquarters in Kohima on February 28.
Over 150 constables representing various units in Nagaland gathered outside the Police Headquarters, holding placards with messages like ‘we want justice’ and ‘we are indigenous Nagas’ written on them.
The rally was held from 10 am to 11 am after securing approval from the district administration.
The Gauhati High Court quashed the appointments of 935 police constables, made by the Nagaland government between January 2018 and October 2019 without any recruitment advertisement.
The court order came after a petition was filed by unemployed Naga youth in 2022.
Claiming to be victims of a corrupt system, the protesters gathered outside the police headquarters to voice their grievances.
The protesters, mostly uniformed representatives of the police, were those appointed during 2018-2020 period.
The personnel, after holding an hour-long ‘closed door meeting’ with the Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma, submitted a memorandum.
The court asked the Nagaland government to make arrangements for fresh recruitments by the issuance of proper advertisements in the well-circulated newspapers of the state and in accordance with the law.
The court also said that the process of selection should be completed at the earliest, preferably within six months from the date of the judgement.
