Kohima: Nagaland observed the ‘Safer Internet Day 2026’ on Tuesday (February 10) with a series of district-level awareness programmes aimed at promoting safe and responsible use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, in line with this year’s theme, “Smart Tech, Safe Choices – Exploring Safe and Responsible Use of AI.”
In Kohima, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) organised a district-level awareness campaign at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall.
Addressing the programme, EAC Kohima Imtiyenla K said Safer Internet Day is observed globally on the second Tuesday of February. She described the internet as a powerful tool for communication, education, healthcare and entrepreneurship, while cautioning against threats such as cyberbullying, misinformation, deepfakes and online fraud. She stressed the importance of digital literacy and responsible use of AI.
In Dimapur, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner organised a district-level awareness programme and workshop at the DC’s Conference Hall. ADIO (NIC) Dimapur Kamal Chetri spoke on the growing influence of AI in everyday life and warned about its misuse through fake videos and fraudulent voice calls. In her keynote address, EAC (Development) Dimapur Imlijungla Lemtur underlined the need for ethical and responsible use of AI, cautioning against misinformation and misuse of personal data.
In Zunheboto, the observance was held at the DC’s Conference Hall. Additional Deputy Commissioner Tiameren Chang stressed the importance of internet safety and responsible digital behaviour. He cautioned against blind dependence on AI, stating that human judgment must remain paramount.
Himanshu Ranjan, District Informatics Officer, NIC Zunheboto, made a presentation outlining key aspects of online safety and the evolving role of AI.
Across the three districts, the observance highlighted both the opportunities and risks associated with digital technologies, urging citizens to adopt safe online practices, maintain cyber hygiene and use AI responsibly.

Participants were also informed about reporting cybercrime through the National Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in), or at the nearest police station.
