Kohima: The Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Kohima, Nagaland, has released an official directive mandating stringent safety protocols for all uncovered and abandoned borewells across the district.
This follows a directive from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) through the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), as communicated in a Home Department letter dated March 20, 2025.
The circular mandates that all abandoned borewells must be sealed using concrete or metal caps, with regular inspections conducted to prevent any untoward incidents.
It also stipulates that punitive actions will be taken against individuals or entities that fail to adhere to the safety norms outlined in the advisory accompanying the circular.
Additionally, public awareness campaigns will be organized to educate citizens about the risks associated with uncovered borewells and emphasize the importance of timely reporting.
The Deputy Commissioner’s office has also urged residents, landowners, drilling agencies, and government departments to refer to the comprehensive advisory attached to the circular.
