Dimapur: Nagaland on Wednesday marked a milestone in women-focused employment generation with the inauguration of the state’s first women-centric business process outsourcing (BPO) centre in Dimapur, a project Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio described as the beginning of a new chapter in inclusive and technology-driven growth.

The facility, developed through a partnership between the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) and the JSW Foundation, is the first women-exclusive BPO of its kind in the Northeast.

In its initial phase, the centre will employ around 125 women, with plans to scale up operations and expand its workforce significantly in the coming months.

The BPO will offer IT-enabled service sector jobs to women aged 18 years and above, creating structured employment opportunities within the state.

In his inaugural address, Rio said the project represents more than just the launch of a new facility, calling it a symbol of Nagaland’s commitment to inclusive development, women’s empowerment and digital transformation.

He said the collaboration reflects a shared vision of strengthening skills, building capacity and creating meaningful employment for young people, particularly women.

Highlighting the state’s demographic strengths, the chief minister said Nagaland’s youth are educated, adaptable and English-proficient, making them well-suited for the global service economy.

He noted that the government has consistently prioritised skill development, entrepreneurship and private investment as the pillars of sustainable development.

Rio also underscored the role of women in Naga society, describing them as central to both economic and social life.

He said initiatives like the women-centric BPO would enhance financial independence and professional growth, while also reducing outward migration by enabling young women to pursue careers within their home state.

Chairman of IDAN and Adviser to the Chief Minister Abu Metha described the project as a milestone initiative, stating that nearly Rs. 6 crore has been invested in the first phase by the JSW Foundation and JSW Shakti.

He said the centre has been conceptualised and completed within six months and is expected to expand its workforce to around 500 employees in the next phase.

Chief Operating Officer of JSW Shakti Foundation Rahul Dev said the initiative is aimed at empowering women through sustainable, IT-enabled employment while strengthening the digital and service economy in the region.

He noted that while similar centres operate in several Indian states, the Dimapur facility is the first of its kind in the Northeast.

The programme concluded with the ceremonial presentation of engagement letters to selected candidates and the formal inauguration of the centre, marking a significant step towards women-led economic participation and inclusive growth in Nagaland.
