A third-year resident doctor from Nagaland posted at AIIMS Gorakhpur was allegedly racially abused, stalked and physical assaulted by three unidentified men near the institute campus on Sunday evening, triggering widespread outrage and a police investigation.
According to the police, the doctor, who is specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, was walking back towards the campus when the trio began following her for more than a kilometre.
The men allegedly intercepted her near Gate No. 2 of the institute, close to the Army camp, around 8 pm.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kaustubh confirmed that an FIR has been registered at the AIIMS police station under relevant legal provisions.
While specific sections were not disclosed, he said CCTV footage has helped identify a motorcycle believed to be linked to the suspects.
“Four police teams have been constituted to trace the accused. Strict action will be taken once they are apprehended,” the SSP said.
As per the victim’s complaint, the men allegedly hurled obscene remarks and racial slurs referring to her northeastern identity while following her.
One of the accused reportedly removed his shirt in an attempt to intimidate her, while another allegedly touched her inappropriately.
The doctor raised an alarm, after which the attackers fled the scene.

The incident drew strong condemnation from the National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs, which highlighted the episode on social media, describing it as a case of racial harassment, stalking and sexual assault.
In a post on X, the federation said the resident doctor was subjected to racially discriminatory comments and stereotypes linked to her northeastern origin, leaving her traumatised and humiliated.
The organisation described the incident as a grave violation of her dignity and safety, particularly given that it occurred near her own workplace.
The case has renewed concerns over the safety of women professionals and the persistent issue of racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in different parts of the country, with medical bodies and civil society groups demanding swift arrests and exemplary action against the perpetrators.
