Dimapur: Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma on Friday issued a stern warning to cadres of the NSCN(K) Khango group involved in the abduction and assault of a village headman, stating that police action would follow if the remaining accused fail to surrender.
Speaking at a press conference, Sharma said three cadres had already been taken into custody in connection with the January 19 abduction of Zhimomi.
He explained that the police had restricted the movement of NSCN(K) Khango cadres around the Ceasefire Supervisory Board office and, to avoid any confrontation, held negotiations that led to the handover of the accused.
The DGP, who is also a member of the Ceasefire Monitoring Group/Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFMG/CFSB), underlined that maintaining law and order is the exclusive responsibility of security forces and law enforcement agencies under the ceasefire ground rules.
He stressed that no faction is empowered to take the law into its own hands.
Sharma said any allegations of illegal activities should be brought before the CFSB for peaceful and amicable resolution, rather than resorting to actions such as abduction, detention or intimidation.
Emphasising the role of supervisory board offices, he said they exist solely to preserve peace and prevent misunderstandings among stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the CFMG/CFSB on Thursday directed the NSCN(K) Khango group to hand over seven cadres identified as the prime accused in the case.
Following a preliminary enquiry, police have registered a criminal case at Diphupar Police Station in Chümoukedima under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with NSR.
