KOHIMA: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president, Conrad K Sangma, arrived in Nagaland to engage in discussions to field a common candidate for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Nagaland’s Lok Sabha seats.
Accompanied by NPP leader and Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A Sangma, Chief Minister Sangma’s visit holds significant political implications.
A crucial meeting with Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, is slated for later in the day. “We are here for a political meeting and will soon be meeting Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio,” announced Chief Minister Sangma upon his arrival in Nagaland on Monday.
The NPP’s visit follows the recent decision by the BJP to support NPP candidates for the two Lok Sabha in Shillong and Tura.
Earlier on Sunday, expressing gratitude for the support extended by various political parties in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Sangma highlighted the consolidation of NDA partners in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur for the upcoming parliamentary polls.
In a strategic move, the BJP opted to withdraw from the electoral race in Meghalaya to bolster support for its NDA and MDA ally, NPP.
Concurrently, the saffron party pledged support to the Naga People’s Front (NPF) in one of Manipur’s parliamentary seats and the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha constituency.
Amidst these developments, Meghalaya BJP president, Rikman Momin, expressed intentions to appeal to the national party president, JP Nadda, urging a reconsideration of the decision to support NPP candidates Ampareen Lyngdoh (Shillong) and Agatha Sangma (Tura) in the April 19 Lok Sabha polls.
As the political landscape evolves ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the collaborative efforts within the NDA underscore the strategic alliances shaping the electoral dynamics in Northeast.
