Kohima: Torrential rainfall over the past few days has unleashed severe flooding across Nagaland, claiming three lives and bringing vital services to a halt.

Officials confirmed on Monday that flight operations at Dimapur Airport have been suspended, while landslides have blocked key sections of National Highway 29, crippling movement between Dimapur and Kohima.

The three fatalities—two men and a woman—were reported from Dimapur, where victims were electrocuted in their homes after floodwaters inundated residential areas.

The incidents occurred over the weekend in Burma Camp and Kuda Village, highlighting the rising risks posed by waterlogged conditions and damaged infrastructure.

Flooding in Dimapur reached alarming levels, with water in some areas rising up to three feet.

Residents in Half-Nagarjan were seen navigating through submerged streets using boats or swimming to safety.

A total of 52 people were rescued from severely affected zones by district authorities as evacuation efforts continued.

Operations at Dimapur Airport were suspended on Sunday after water flooded the runway and aircraft parking bays. Multiple flights, including services by IndiGo and Air India Express, were cancelled. Passengers have been advised to contact airlines directly for updates.

National Highway 29, a critical link between Dimapur and Kohima, has been partially blocked by landslides triggered by the relentless downpour.

Commuters face heightened risks due to debris and slippery conditions along the route.

Among the worst-hit regions are Dimapur, Kohima, and Niuland.

In Niuland district alone, 70 villages have been affected. Damage to bridges, homes, fisheries, and paddy fields has raised concerns over a looming food security crisis in the coming weeks.

Dimapur Deputy Commissioner Dr. Tinojongshi Chang said water levels have begun to recede slightly due to a pause in rainfall overnight, but added that authorities remain on alert with more rain forecast.

The local administration and the District Disaster Management Authority are scheduled to hold a coordination meeting to review the evolving situation.

As monsoon conditions persist, state disaster response teams are on standby and residents have been urged to steer clear of flood-prone areas and exercise caution.
