Kohima: Five prominent tribal organizations in Nagaland are set to begin a phased agitation on May 29 due to the state government’s ongoing silence regarding calls to review its 48-year-old job reservation policy.

The 5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP), representing Angami Public Organisation, Ao Senden, Lotha Hoho, Rengma Hoho, and Sumi Hoho, announced its decision on May 24 to stage peaceful protests if the state government failed to address the demands concerning the Nagaland job reservation policy.

In a statement, 5 Tribes CoRRP convenor Er Tesinlo Semy and member secretary GK Zhimomi said that the state government had failed to respond to its memorandum for a review of the reservation policy dated September 20, 2024, and the 30-day ultimatum of April 26, 2025, which ended on May 26, 2025.

“Consequently, a joint meeting of the five tribal apex bodies, along with their youth and student organizations, was held on May 24, 2025, at CPO Hall in Chumoukedima. There, it was resolved that the first phase of the agitation will commence on May 29, 2025, in all district headquarters inhabited by the five tribes,” it stated.

The committee informed that as part of the protest, the protesters would march to DC office in respective districts and submit an ultimatum reminder to the state government through deputy commissioner.

As part of the protest, participants will march to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in their respective districts and submit a reminder ultimatum to the state government through the Deputy Commissioner.

The committee has urged all public members, especially youth and students, to join the movement against 48 years of indefinite reservation policy “in which various review committees has never addressed the concerns of non backward tribes.”

It said, “The phase-II stir would be peaceful dharna outside Nagaland Civil Secretariat starting June 2, 2025 and in phase-3, there would be total shutdown in all districts inhabited by five Tribes starting June 9, 2025.”

According to the committee, its demand was either the scrapping of the job reservation policy for backward tribes or the reservation of the remaining unreserved quota exclusively for the five tribes.
