KOHIMA: The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has called off the indefinite shutdown across the state from tomorrow.
This decision reportedly comes after the chamber received encouraging feedback from the state government regarding their demand to abolish illegal taxes imposed by Underground groups on business establishments.
Additionally, the DCCI stressed the need for stricter enforcement of regulations against alleged extortion demands by these groups.
Earlier today, businesses throughout the state opened for a limited six-hour window, allowing residents to procure essential supplies in anticipation of the indefinite shutdown.

The call for the government’s intervention stemmed from concerns raised by the DCCI on April 28, urging the Nagaland government to clarify the legality of taxes imposed by UGs on the state’s business community.
In a formal letter addressed to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the chamber presented a list of five demands, highlighting the necessity of prompt action from the government.
Among the demands, the DCCI sought clarification on the legality of taxes levied by UGs and urged the government to declare summoning of the business community to offices, camps, and monitoring cells of National Political Groups (NPGs) as illegal.
Efforts to resolve the situation intensified on April 26, the day the shutter-down began, with the Nagaland Home Department appealing to the DCCI to reconsider their decision.

Additionally, the Department instructed law enforcement authorities to take stringent action against UGs involved in extortion, particularly in Dimapur.
The DCCI’s decision to call off the shutdown reflects a potential breakthrough in addressing the concerns of the business community, albeit with a continued emphasis on government intervention to curb illegal practices by Underground groups.
