Kohima: The Congress Party is determined to bring political change to Nagaland by ending the reign of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), newly-appointed AICC Secretary for Nagaland, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, declared on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference after meeting with office bearers of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), Ulaka outlined the party’s strategy for the 2028 assembly elections and emphasised its commitment to forming a Congress-led government in the state.

“The people of Nagaland deserve better governance, free from corruption and mismanagement. We are preparing to ensure that the Congress emerges as the choice for change in 2028,” Ulaka said.

The Congress, which has been absent from the Nagaland assembly for over two decades, made a strong comeback by winning the state’s lone Lok Sabha seat last year.

Candidate S. Supongmeren Jamir defeated NDPP rival Chumben Murry by a decisive margin of 50,984 votes, signalling public dissatisfaction with the NDPP-BJP coalition.

Ulaka accused the ruling coalition of misgovernance, alleging that the state’s development has been stifled by institutionalized corruption and inefficiency.

“Reports indicate that a 20 percent cut is demanded for almost every public service. This is unacceptable,” he asserted.

Lauding the leadership of former Congress Chief Minister S.C. Jamir, Ulaka emphasized that the people of Nagaland deserve a government that prioritizes development, education, and economic opportunities.

The Congress leader outlined plans to reorganize the party’s structure in the state, including district tours, forming key committees, and identifying potential candidates within the next three months.

“Our focus is on building a corruption-free, development-oriented governance system,” Ulaka added.

He also highlighted pressing issues in the state, including inadequate access to quality education, rising unemployment, soaring prices of essential goods, and the challenges faced by women, including increasing reports of atrocities.

NPCC President and Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir expressed confidence in Ulaka’s leadership and vision. “Under his guidance, we can bring justice and progress to the people of Nagaland,” Jamir said.

Ulaka also voiced optimism about the Congress’s prospects in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, predicting a regime change at the national level.

“Nothing can stop us if we remain focused, organized, and committed to the people’s welfare,” he declared.

The Congress pledged to restore Nagaland’s prosperity and provide a better future for its citizens, with plans to engage with grassroots organisations and implement policies that address the state’s core challenges.
