Aizawl: Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader V Zirsanga is set to be sworn in as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) on Thursday, following an official announcement.

Governor VK Singh approved Zirsanga’s appointment on Monday, marking a significant political shift in the council.

According to a notification issued by the District Council and Minority Affairs Department, the LADC must hold a special session within 30 days for Zirsanga to prove his majority through a floor test.

Zirsanga’s ascension follows the collapse of the MNF-Congress coalition’s executive committee on February 12, when former CEM C Lalmuanthanga resigned moments before facing a floor test.

The MNF-Congress coalition, which had taken power on May 14 last year, lost its majority after two MNF members, Zirsanga and Lallawmsanga Apetow, pledged their support to the ZPM.

Zirsanga, backed by other ZPM leaders, subsequently met with the governor to stake his claim to form the next executive committee in the council.

In the current composition of the council, the ZPM holds 13 seats, the MNF has 11, and Congress controls one seat.

The LADC, headquartered in Lawngtlai, is one of three autonomous district councils in southern Mizoram.

Established in 1972, it was created to govern the Lai people and represents a crucial component of Mizoram’s tribal administration framework.
