Aizawl: The Mizoram government is taking steps to make several recently upgraded schools operational from the upcoming academic session, School Education Minister Vanlalthlana informed the state assembly on Tuesday.
The minister said the previous government led by the Mizo National Front (MNF) had upgraded 180 schools across the state.
He added that the present Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)-led government has completed the upgradation process for 100 institutions.
Of these, 44 have been upgraded to higher secondary schools, another 44 to high schools and 34 to elementary schools, he said.
Vanlalthlana said the government is currently working on completing the necessary administrative and logistical arrangements so that the upgraded institutions can begin functioning from the next academic year.
He also informed the House that notifications for upgrading additional schools are being processed.
The minister said the government is simultaneously working to address the shortage of teachers in the state. The School Education Department has sought approval from higher authorities to fill vacant posts in primary schools and is planning to recruit teachers on a contract basis for middle schools.
He added that the recruitment process for 20 casual teachers in Science and Mathematics for high schools and 15 casual teachers for higher secondary schools is currently underway.

Apart from this, approval has been granted for the appointment of 57 regular teachers and the recruitment process is in progress, the minister said.
He further noted that several vacant posts under the Samagra Shiksha scheme will also be filled in phases.
