Aizawl: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Thursday virtually inaugurated the newly constructed Academic cum Administrative building of the College of Horticulture, Thenzawl in Mizoram’s Serchhip district.

The union minister also inaugurated the new PG girls’ hostel at the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry in Selesih near Aizawl.

Mizoram Governor Gen. Dr. VK Singh joined the event virtually from his office, while Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma attended the ceremony in person as the guest of honour at Thenzawl.

In his address, Chauhan highlighted Mizoram’s potential as a fertile and climatically favourable state for agricultural and horticultural development, despite the challenges posed by its hilly terrain and deep valleys.

Chauhan emphasized that these two colleges would continue to significantly benefit farmers and contribute to further development in Mizoram.

Chauhan expressed confidence that both the horticulture and veterinary colleges under the Central Agriculture University (CAU) would serve as valuable assets for the farming community, helping to improve agricultural productivity and provide support to aspiring students and farmers.

He noted that while 55 per cent of Mizoram’s land area is cultivable for horticulture, only about 10 per cent is currently under effective use.

He underlined the vast scope for development through the promotion of FPOs, co-operatives, efficient supply chains and improved market access.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma stated that the two significant institutions under Central Agriculture University (CAU)–the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, and College of Horticulture — are important assets to Mizoram, offering quality education not only to students from Mizoram and the North East but also to those from across India.
