Agartala/Aizawl: Authorities in Tripura and Mizoram have launched parallel investigations after an under-construction government facility near the inter-state border was severely damaged by unknown individuals earlier this week, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The incident took place late Tuesday night in Phuldungsei village, located along the border between North Tripura district and Mizoram’s Mamit district.
According to North Tripura Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai, the structure was being developed by the Tripura Forest Department as part of an eco-tourism initiative.
“Unidentified individuals are suspected to have vandalised the building. We have initiated a probe and are working closely with our counterparts in Mizoram to identify those responsible. Our cooperation with Mizoram Police remains strong,” SP Rai said.
Though the attack raised concerns, police confirmed that the situation along the border remains peaceful and under control.
Additional security forces have been deployed on both sides to prevent any potential flare-ups.
Sources in Mizoram reported that explosives may have been used in the incident, which has further intensified the seriousness of the investigation.
Officials from both states are keeping a close watch on developments in the area.
The region surrounding the 109-km Tripura-Mizoram border has long had disputed stretches.
Authorities from North Tripura and Mizoram’s Mamit district, along with Survey of India officials, have held multiple rounds of discussions in the past to resolve these territorial ambiguities.
Tensions occasionally surface when construction is undertaken in these contested zones.
Mizoram-based civil society groups and student organizations have previously objected to any infrastructure activity initiated by the Tripura government near disputed areas.

Tripura’s Forest, Science, Technology, and Environment Minister Animesh Debbarma confirmed that he has requested a detailed report on the damage.
“I have asked the department to provide a full briefing on what transpired on Tuesday night,” he stated.
As investigations continue independently in both states, officials remain focused on ensuring the situation does not escalate further and that all parties involved are held accountable.
