AIZAWL: Mizoram’s ruling party, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), clinched a resounding victory in the Lok Sabha polls, outshining the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF).
ZPM’s candidate, Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, emerged victorious over his closest contender, K Vanlalvena, who concurrently serves as the sitting Rajya Sabha member of the MNF, by a commanding margin of 68,288 votes.
Commenting on the momentous win, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma hailed the electoral outcome as a proof to the ZPM’s burgeoning influence, despite being a relatively nascent political entity.
Addressing jubilant ZPM supporters amidst celebratory fervour over the party’s landslide victory in the state’s Lok Sabha polls, the Chief Minister remarked, “The remarkable strides made by the ZPM are vividly reflected in the Lok Sabha poll results. It is gratifying to witness our resounding victory in the majority of the assembly segments, including 10 constituencies where we faced setbacks in the previous assembly elections.”
This electoral triumph marks a historic milestone for the ZPM, marking its maiden victory in the Lok Sabha polls since its inception in 2017.
Mizoram, characterised by its singular Lok Sabha seat reserved for Scheduled Tribes, witnessed a decisive shift in political dynamics with this outcome.
The last Lok Sabha elections in 2019 saw the seat captured by the then ruling MNF’s C Lalrosanga, who secured victory over independent candidate Lalanghinglova Hmar by a narrower margin of 8140 votes.
With ZPM’s resounding victory, the political landscape in Mizoram undergoes a notable transformation, highlighting the electorate’s endorsement of the party’s vision and policies.
