AIZAWL: In a startling revelation, Mizoram has witnessed the seizure of drugs worth over Rs. 982.5 crore in the year 2024 up to the month of May.
This disclosure was made by Veenu Bansal, IGP (Intel) & Head of Anti-Narcotics Task Force, during the 7th Meeting of the State Level Narco-Coordination (NCORD) recently.
She further shared that a total of 418 cases were registered, and 581 individuals have been arrested in connection with drug-related activities during this period.
Chaired by Chief Secretary Dr Renu Sharma at the SAD Conference Hall in Mizoram New Capital Complex (MINECO), the meeting extensively reviewed the actions taken by various stakeholders, including Mizoram Police, Excise and Narcotics Department, Assam Rifles, BSF, and MSACS, in combating the drug menace.
The meeting was attended by DGP Mizoram, IGP Intelligence, Home Commissioner, Secretary END, senior officials of the state government, DDG (ER) NCB, DIG Assam Rifles, and DIG BSF.
District Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all districts also participated via video conference.
Anil Shukla, DGP Mizoram, highlighted the crucial need for compliance with the stringent provisions of the NDPS Act for effective prosecution.
He also stressed on the importance of joint interrogations by various law enforcement agencies in drug-related cases.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Sharma commended the law enforcement agencies for their relentless efforts and urged all stakeholders to sustain their commitment in the fight against drugs.
District DCs and SPs were instructed to convene District NCORD meetings on a monthly basis to enhance coordination in combating the drug menace at the district level.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has established a four-tier Narco-Coordination (NCORD) mechanism to enhance coordination among nationwide stakeholders, from grassroots to apex levels, in effectively combating the menace of drugs.
The Apex NCORD, Executive NCORD, State NCORD, and District NCORD are the four pillars of this mechanism, aimed at fostering a cohesive and concerted effort in tackling the drug crisis.
