Aizawl: Mizoram witnessed a significant rise in tourist arrivals over the past two years, with a total of 12.68 lakh visitors recorded between 2024 and 2025, Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar informed the state Assembly on Friday.
Replying to a question from Lalchhandama Ralte, MLA of the Mizo National Front and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Hmar said that the total tourist arrivals during the two-year period included 16,898 foreign visitors.
Providing year-wise figures, the minister said the state recorded 4,27,302 tourist arrivals in 2024. The number saw a sharp increase in 2025, rising to 8,41,322 visitors.
Domestic travellers accounted for the overwhelming majority of tourists visiting the state, comprising about 98.66 per cent of the total arrivals during the period.
According to the minister, 4.21 lakh domestic tourists visited the state in 2024, and the number nearly doubled to 8.29 lakh in 2025.
Foreign tourist arrivals also registered a notable increase. Hmar said that while 5,414 international visitors came to Mizoram in 2024, the figure rose to 11,484 in 2025, marking an increase of around 112 per cent.
Officials attributed the surge in tourist footfall to improved infrastructure and enhanced promotional efforts, highlighting the state’s eco-tourism potential.
Earlier, addressing the Assembly during the first day of the ongoing Budget session on February 17, Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh stated that the state is steadily emerging as one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the Northeast.
He noted that the expansion of infrastructure and the arrival of the national railway network have played a key role in boosting tourism.

The 51.38-km-long Bairabi–Sairang railway line, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13 last year, has connected the state to the country’s railway network. The railway link has also integrated Aizawl into the national grid and contributed to the rise in tourist arrivals, the governor had said.
