Aizawl/Guwahati: Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is set to become the fourth northeastern capital to be connected to India’s railway network within the next five months.
The Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge railway line project, spanning 51.38 kilometers, is nearing completion, officials announced on Tuesday.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is overseeing the project, which is being constructed at a cost of over Rs. 8,210 crore.
This development will place Aizawl alongside Guwahati, Agartala, and Naharlagun as northeastern capitals with rail connectivity.
NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, confirmed the project’s progress, citing an inspection by NFR General Manager (Construction), Arun Kumar Chaudhary.
Chaudhary, accompanied by senior officials, reviewed ongoing works at key locations, including the construction of stations at Kawnpui and Mualkhang, the Sairang station yard, and the extensive bridge and tunnel infrastructure along the route.
The project is divided into four sections: Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang.
The Bairabi-Hortoki section became operational in July 2024, and efforts are underway to complete the remaining sections at the earliest, Sharma said.
Additionally, Chaudhary inspected railway operations in Tripura, conducting a window trailing inspection from Sabroom to Agartala.
The Sabroom station, located near the Bangladesh border, plays a critical role in logistics and trade.
During his visit, Chaudhary also met with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to discuss ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the region’s connectivity and economic opportunities.
This significant project marks another step in integrating the northeastern states with the national railway network, promising improved connectivity and economic growth for Mizoram and the surrounding regions.
