AIZAWL: Mizoram Police, in two joint operations with the Assam Police, arrested a Myanmarese couple and two individuals from Champhai district.
The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a significant cache of explosive materials and over 2 kgs of heroin worth Rs 71 lakh.
The couple from Myanmar, identified as Biakrema (29) and Ramthazuali (28), was arrested with a haul of 110 Gelatin sticks weighing 14.084 kg and an equal number of detonators.
The suspects, hailing from Tiau Khawmawi village in the Chin state of Myanmar, were allegedly transporting the materials from Zokhawthar to their home country.
The mode of transportation, a “Kenbo 125 scooty”, owned and operated by the accused, too has been seized.
In a parallel incident, two individuals were arrested when 198 soap cases containing 2.393 Kg of heroin worth ₹ 71,79,000 were confiscated from them on Monday.
Driving a pick-up truck, the two arrested have been identified as B. Liansanga (45) and R. Malsawmthara (35) of Tuipui Village in Champhai district.
Pu Gavit Gogna, IPS, SDPO, Champhai, took charge of the situation, personally supervising the teams deployed to Zokhawthar, the post read.
The Mizoram police has also refused to rule out potential connections between the two cases.
“Joint interrogation and forward and backward linkages will be established for both the cases,” the official post affirmed.
As Myanmar grapples with unrest, the smuggling of illegal arms and explosives from India into the country via Mizoram has raised serious security alarms among authorities.
In November 2023, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), intensifying its crackdown, confiscation of more than 2,400 kg of explosives destined for a Myanmar-based group fighting the government. The agency had also made an arrest in this connection.
