Aizawl: A Myanmar national was arrested in south Mizoram’s Siaha district on Tuesday with foreign currency, smuggled tobacco and foreign cigarettes, officials said.
The accused, identified as U Phyu Maung, a resident of Rakhine in Myanmar, was apprehended by personnel of the Assam Rifles at Tuipang village.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the smuggling of currency and tobacco products, Assam Rifles personnel set up a check post in the area and intercepted a dumper vehicle, from which the contraband was seized, officials said.
The arrested individual, along with the seized items, was later handed over to the Tuipang police station for further legal proceedings.
Mizoram shares a long and porous international border with Myanmar, and border districts such as Siaha are considered vulnerable to cross-border smuggling and other illegal activities.
Security agencies have intensified surveillance and checks along key routes in the region to curb the movement of contraband and prevent illegal cross-border trade, officials said.
