Aizawl: With civic elections in Aizawl drawing closer, Mizoram’s principal opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), has announced its list of candidates for the upcoming polls to the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Although the Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) has not yet formally announced the election schedule, officials have indicated that voting is likely to take place in April or May.
The list of nominees for all 19 municipal wards was unveiled by MNF president Zoramthanga at a programme held at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl. Speaking at the event, the former chief minister exuded confidence that the party would return to power in the civic body.
Describing the candidates as a strong and capable team, Zoramthanga said their professional and social backgrounds reflected competence and dedication. He appealed to voters to extend their support to MNF candidates across all wards.
Expressing optimism about the party’s prospects, he said he was hopeful of victory with what he described as divine blessings and the backing of the electorate.
Criticising the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Zoramthanga alleged that the ZPM had not fulfilled the promises it made before coming to power and had instead acted contrary to its assurances, claiming that public dissatisfaction with the government was growing.
Pointing to recent electoral results, Zoramthanga argued that the ZPM’s performance indicated waning support. He cited the party’s defeat in the Sinlung Hills elections, its poor showing in village and local council polls, and its loss in the Dampa Assembly by-election.

Referring to the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) elections held in December last year, he said the MNF had emerged as the largest party, while the ZPM finished third.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has already announced 13 candidates for the AMC elections.
In the last AMC polls conducted in February 2021, the MNF secured a clear majority by winning 11 of the 19 seats. The ZPM captured six seats, while the Congress won two.
