AIZAWL: Intensifying its crackdown on drug trafficking, the Mizoram police have arrested four persons hailing from Tripura and Assam in two separate incidents in the past 48 hours.

On the morning of August 17, the Mizoram police arrested two individuals from Tripura and seized a substantial quantity of methamphetamine tablets weighing an 2.330 kg.

The accused have been identified as Sourabh Nath (34) and Nur Ahmed (39) both hailing from North Tripura. The Mizoram police’s Aizawl District Special Branch (DSB) team meticulously carried out the operation at the bustling Dawrpui new market situated in the heart of Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram. Both Nath and Ahmed were apprehended on the grounds of violating the Narcotics Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

Two days prior, on Tuesday, the police in Serchhip district arrested two individuals from Assam for possessing a significant amount of heroin and methamphetamine tablets. Acting on tip off, a patrolling team from the East Lungdar police intercepted a suspicious vehicle, resulting in the apprehension of the drug traffickers.

The arrested individuals have been identified as MD Ekbal Hussain (21) and Sayad Uddin, aged 27, both natives of Karimganj district in Assam. The intercepted vehicle was found to contain 548.15 grams of heroin, concealed ingeniously within 39 soap cases, and a staggering 5.32 kg (equivalent to 50,000 tablets) of methamphetamine.

These accused, too, have been charged under the sections 21(c)/22(c)/29/25 of the Narcotics Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

The back-to-back successes for the Mizoram police highlight their unwavering commitment to combating the pervasive drug trade that poses a significant threat to societal well-being. With these recent arrests and seizures, the police have sent a stern message to the drug cartels that their activities will not go unchecked within the state’s boundaries. The police force remains resolute in its determination to root out this menace and ensure a safer future for the citizens of Mizoram.
