Aizawl: In a development that has brought pride to Mizoram, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appointed Muanpuii Saiawi as India’s next High Commissioner to New Zealand.

The Ministry issued the official notification announcing her appointment on Monday (January 19).

Saiawi, a senior diplomat from the 2005 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), is presently serving as Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs) at the MEA headquarters in New Delhi. According to the ministry, she is expected to assume charge of her new assignment in Wellington shortly.

Her appointment comes at a significant moment in India–New Zealand relations, as the two countries look to deepen cooperation in key areas such as trade, technology, education, security and regional affairs. With her extensive diplomatic experience, Saiawi is expected to play an important role in advancing bilateral engagement.

During her diplomatic career, Saiawi has served in a range of roles at Indian missions overseas, including as first secretary (political) at the Indian Embassy in the Republic of Korea, first secretary (information, education and culture) in Japan, and counsellor (press, information, culture and tourism) in Israel.

She also held key roles in cyber diplomacy and new and emerging strategic technologies in the Ministry of External Affairs.

She has received the Ambassador Bimal Sanyal Memorial Gold Medal for best officer trainee and Silver Medal for best dissertation, as well as being named best probationer of the 2005 batch of Indian Foreign Service officers.

Saiawi hails from a family with a strong legacy of public service and is the daughter of Pu Lalhmingliana Saiawi, one of the first IAS officers from the Mizo community.

Her elevation to a top diplomatic post is being seen as an inspiration for aspiring civil servants in Mizoram and across the Northeast.
