AIZAWL: Mizoram will soon have a committee dedicated to eliminate the scourge of drugs from Mizoram.
Reiterating the state government’s resolve to tackle the growing drug crisis, Chief Minister Lalduhoma, while speaking at a drug awareness campaign at central Aizawl recently, made the announcement.
“In our ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse, the state government is forming a dedicated core committee, sending a strong signal to the masses about eradicating the ill effects of drugs in Mizoram” Chief Minister Lalduhoma declared.
Underscoring the government’s proactive stance against illicit drug trafficking within the state, he also highlighted the pivotal role of churches and civil society organisations in combating this pressing issue.
Earlier, while announcing his first budget as the Chief Minister in February, Lalduhoma had identified eradication of drug menace as one of his government’s key priorities.

Speaking at the campaign, V. Lalnunthara, founder and president of the Foundation for Drug-Free Mizoram, disclosed alarming statistics, stating that 41 individuals have succumbed to substance abuse in the first five months of this year alone.
He warned that Mizoram is on track to record its highest number of drug-related fatalities in two decades, underscoring the severity of the drug epidemic.
The Chief Minister’s announcement follows recent revelations by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force that narcotics valued at over Rs. 982.5 crore have been seized in Mizoram during 2024 up to May.
Head of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, Veenu Bansal, also reported 418 registered cases and 581 arrests made in connection with drug-related activities during the same period.
In January, Mizoram’s Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Shukla had identified Mizoram as a significant drug-trafficking route.
