Aizawl: Mizoram is gearing up to host the inaugural Aizawl International Half Marathon in April.

The event, the schedule for which will be announced after approval from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), is expected to attract about 2,000 runners from across the country and abroad, sports minister Lalnghinglova Hmar said.

Hmar emphasized the importance of the marathon, noting its potential to boost sports development, promote health and fitness, attract tourists, and contribute to the fight against drug abuse in the state.

For the successful organization of the proposed international event, the State Sports and Youth Service Department recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Innovations India in the presence of Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar. The agreement is valid for three years.

He said that the government has approached the AFI for recognition and schedule of the event and is awaiting a response from it.

“In case the AFI can’t include us in its calendar and fix the date, we are planning to organise the event in April as we are optimistic for approval at least,” he said.

Hmar said that the proposed Aizawl International Half Marathon is part of the government’s efforts to secure a place on the country’s marathon map.

He also mentioned that they will conduct registration for the event online, except for students, who will register offline through their schools.

Innovations India chief executive officer (CEO) Rahul Bali, who is also the curator of the proposed Aizawl International Half Marathon, said there will be three categories — 21.1 km marathon, 10 km for women, and 5 km for children and the elderly.

He emphasized that the marathon would provide a unique experience for participants, allowing them to explore Aizawl’s rich culture.

He added that the event would be a sports festival, incorporating a variety of exciting activities in addition to the race.
