Aizawl: Mizoram’s growing reputation as one of India’s leading ginger-producing states has prompted a national panel to recommend that it be formally declared the country’s “Ginger Capital”, a senior official said on Tuesday.
The proposal emerged during a high-level stakeholders’ consultation on Mizoram’s ginger sector held in New Delhi on Monday, jointly organised by NITI Aayog and the state government.
The state’s flagship crop—already supported through minimum support price under the Zoram People’s Movement government’s ‘Bana Kaih’ scheme—has seen significant expansion over the past two years.
According to officials, NITI Aayog suggested that recognising Mizoram as India’s Ginger Capital would help strengthen the state’s branding, provided the government continues to maintain the organic nature of its produce, adopts advanced processing technologies, and diversifies its markets both within India and overseas.
The consultation focused on building stronger market linkages, improving processing and value-addition infrastructure, and addressing supply-chain hurdles.
Representatives from Farmer Producer Organisations, industry bodies and exporters discussed strategies to increase Mizoram ginger’s presence in domestic and international markets and create a more efficient ecosystem for processing and trade.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma, addressing the meet, said Mizoram’s premium-quality ginger has positioned the state among the country’s top producers.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to make agriculture a stable and profitable enterprise, including the state-backed minimum support price of Rs. 50 per kg for ginger.
Lalduhoma said Mizoram has improved its investment and industry policies to attract private players, not just in ginger but also in other agri-based and value-added sectors.
He invited stakeholders to the Ginger Buyer–Seller Meet scheduled in Aizawl on December 5–6.
More than 60 participants attended the consultation, including NITI Aayog Additional Secretary Rohit Kumar, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, Food Processing Industries Secretary A.P. Das Joshi, Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, Mizoram Labour Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar and Chief Secretary K.R. Meena.
