AIZAWL: The Mizoram government has requested financial assistance from the Centre to upgrade Zoram Medical College (ZMC), the state’s only medical college, according to an official statement on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma, currently in the national capital, highlighted the critical role of ZMC during a meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday evening.

He highlighted the urgent need for financial support to upgrade the medical college situated at Falkawn, approximately 15 km from Aizawl.

The discussions between Lalduhoma and Nadda also focused on the establishment of a critical care block at ZMC and various measures to bolster Mizoram’s healthcare sector.

Assuring prompt assistance, Nadda affirmed his commitment to providing financial aid expeditiously.

The Union Minister pledged to personally oversee the process of setting up the critical care block and assured Lalduhoma of informing him about the decision at the earliest opportunity.

Earlier commitments by Nadda in June included an assurance of Rs 170 crore under a Special Package dedicated to the development of Zoram Medical College.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma’s visit to Delhi has been marked by a series of crucial meetings with Union Ministers.

Prior to his discussion with Nadda, Lalduhoma met with Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to address highway projects in Mizoram.

Subsequently, he engaged with DoNER and Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, among others.

An official from the Chief Minister’s Office highlighted that these meetings were pivotal in addressing developmental priorities and other significant issues concerning Mizoram’s progress.

Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, Mizoram’s sole MP-elect from the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), accompanied Lalduhoma during some of these important engagements.

The efforts underscore Mizoram’s proactive approach in securing vital resources and support from the Centre to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and overall development initiatives in the state.
