Aizawl: Mizoram recorded 145 tuberculosis-related deaths in 2025, the highest toll in the past six years, according to official data released under the National TB Elimination Programme.

The data shows that 2,275 people were diagnosed with TB during the year, including 911 women.

While the overall number of cases was marginally lower than the 2,291 reported in 2024, fatalities continued to rise, underscoring growing concerns over disease severity and late detection.

Of the total cases reported in 2025, 1,900 were detected at government health facilities, while 375 were identified at private centres.

Officials noted that TB deaths in the state have shown a steady upward trend since 2020, when 31 fatalities were recorded. The number rose to 46 in 2021, 87 in 2022, 119 in 2023 and 136 in 2024, before climbing further in 2025.

The data also revealed that 146 patients were diagnosed with multi-drug-resistant TB, while 267 were found to be co-infected with TB and HIV/AIDS.

Children accounted for a significant share of new infections, with 141 patients aged below 14 years. Officials said about 84 per cent of those diagnosed during the year were successfully treated.

District-wise, Aizawl reported the highest number of cases at 1,569, followed by Lunglei with 155 and Kolasib with 138. Serchhip recorded the lowest number of cases at 52.

Health officials said community participation has been picking up under the PM TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, with over 100 individuals registering through the ‘Nikshay’ online platform to adopt TB patients or provide financial support.

The initiative aims to strengthen community involvement, improve treatment outcomes and supplement government efforts through voluntary and corporate social responsibility contributions as India works towards eliminating TB.
