AIZAWL: If all goes as planned, three women from Mizoram currently enduring severe hardship in Syria will soon be reunited with their families.
The Mizoram Police have initiated a concerted effort to expedite their return, with emerging reports indicating that legal notices have been served to the employers of the Mizo women, who have been employed as housemaids in the country since November 2022.
Officials have revealed that the Indian Embassy in Syria has been in contact with the Mizoram government, apprising them of the dire circumstances faced by the women.
Furthermore, on May 19, embassy officials convened a meeting with representatives from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the situation.
“Despite challenges posed by the volatile political climate in Syria, progress is underway to repatriate the Mizo housemaids. Necessary procedures are in place, although the situation remains complex,” a Mizoram Police official told the press.
Initially, the Syrian placement agency demanded a payment of Rs 2 lakh seven thousand per housemaid for their early repatriation, as stipulated in the contract agreement.
However, following interventions by the Indian Embassy and Syrian authorities, the agency has agreed to provide replacements instead.
The plight of the three Mizo housemaids has garnered attention on various social media platforms, prompting Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga to take decisive action.
“Under the vigilant guidance of the Chief Minister and Home Minister, one Lalkhumtiri, who encountered issues in Dubai, was successfully repatriated on May 9. The state government remains committed to closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with all stakeholders to ensure the safe return of the three Mizo girls to Mizoram at the earliest,” a statement from the Mizoram Police affirmed.
