AIZAWL: Union Minister Bhagirath Choudhary has said that robust road and railway infrastructure in Mizoram is the need of the hour to boost tourism and agriculture.
The Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, who arrived in Mizoram on Wednesday on a three-day tour, said the state has great potential for organic farming and is rich in natural resources.
Despite promising market opportunities for farmers’ produce outside the state, substantial progress in this area is hindered by the state’s inadequate road infrastructure and communication networks, he said.
Stating that farmers in Mizoram will face problems due to lack of proper road infra and railway lines, the union minister said the Centre and the state must work in tandem to address the problem.
“Inter-state as well as intra-state roads and railway lines should be improved in Mizoram to develop tourism and ensure that the farmers are economically uplifted.
“Centre has come up with a slew of schemes to assist farmers whose crops have been affected by natural calamities. The central government provides compensation to affected farmers based on reports or complaints submitted by the state government,” he said.
He further said the Centre has also developed crop insurance schemes, which are yet to be availed in Mizoram.
Choudhary claimed that the income of the farmers will be doubled by four times under the NDA government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by 2029.
