Aizawl: Mizoram has witnessed a series of rain-triggered disasters over the past 10 days, resulting in five fatalities and widespread damage across the state, according to the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department.
Three deaths were reported in Champhai district, while Aizawl and Serchhip districts reported one fatality each, caused by landslides and house collapses following incessant rain and flash floods.
The state recorded 552 landslides and damage to 152 houses during this period. At least 198 families were forced to abandon their homes due to landslides and land fissures, while 92 families evacuated due to flooding.
Champhai district, bordering Myanmar, has been the worst affected—reporting 209 landslides, nine house damages, and the evacuation of 14 families. Serchhip district saw one death, 75 landslides, 27 damaged homes, and 132 displaced families.
Aizawl district reported 18 landslides, 13 damaged houses, and 17 abandoned homes. Khawzawl logged 75 landslides, Lunglei 60, and Siaha 53. In terms of property loss, Siaha saw 29 damaged houses, followed by Kolasib (23), Lunglei (18), and Khawzawl (9).
All schools across Mizoram—except those in Saitual district—remained closed on Tuesday due to the ongoing adverse weather. Meanwhile, more than 100 trucks carrying essential supplies were reportedly stranded in Serchhip district.
Rainfall figures from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) show that Aizawl received 253.7 mm of rain over the last three days, followed by Khawzawl with 248.3 mm and Siaha with 241.5 mm. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall over the next five days.
