Aizawl: Mizoram Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister PC Vanlalruata on Monday announced that the state government will soon launch an insurance scheme to safeguard farmers against financial losses arising from crop failure or damage caused by natural disasters, pests, or diseases.
He said a state-level coordination committee on crop insurance has already been constituted.
The government has also floated a tender and selected a general insurance company to implement the scheme, the minister added.
Vanlalruata said that one of the government’s key promises was to purchase agricultural produce and introduce crop insurance to safeguard farmers from financial losses. He added that the chief minister was giving due attention to the welfare of farmers and that the government would now be able to implement the crop insurance scheme.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment, the minister said that it has begun procuring crops directly from farmers, fulfilling one of the promises made by the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) during the 2023 assembly elections.

He mentioned that even though ginger prices had declined, the government continued to purchase the produce from farmers under the “Bana Kaih” (handholding) scheme, launched in September last year. The state government, he said, has already spent or released around Rs 140 crore for procuring raw ginger, with an additional Rs 50 crore earmarked for the scheme in the 2025–26 fiscal year.
