Aizawl: In a bid to check pollution, the Mizoram government has decided to ban all kinds of firecrackers and sky lanterns during Christmas and New Year festivities.
Speaking at an event on Monday at the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) party office, Home Minister K Sapdanga said that the state government will take strict action against people involved in the transportation and bursting of fireworks.
He said the state government will alert all units of police and night patrolling will be conducted in towns and villages to ensure peaceful celebrations of Christmas and New Year.
“The government will also work with civil society organizations to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the festive season,” Sapdanga added.

Mizoram has previously banned firecrackers, sky lanterns, and toy guns during the festive season to protect the environment and maintain the sanctity of Christmas and New Year.
Similarly, firecrackers and other pyrotechnic materials were banned during festivals of other religious groups in the state.
