Aizawl: Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga on Monday flagged off 10 mobile forensic vehicles aimed at strengthening scientific crime investigation across the state, officials said.
The vehicles, sanctioned by the Centre at a cost of Rs. 4.8 crore, are specially designed and equipped with advanced forensic tools to support on-the-spot evidence collection and analysis.
Highlighting the growing importance of forensic science, Sapdanga said India has emerged as one of the global leaders in the field.
He noted that the 2012 Delhi gangrape case, known as the Nirbhaya case, underscored the urgent need for scientific methods in criminal investigations.
“Since then, major steps have been taken nationwide to enhance forensic capabilities. Mizoram’s Forensic Science Laboratory is among the first to implement paperless casework, fast-tracked examinations, and a case tracking system,” he added.

Officials said the mobile units will also aid the effective implementation of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, the new criminal law that mandates forensic certification of evidence in cases with punishments exceeding seven years.
To strengthen forensic infrastructure, the Centre has provided mobile forensic vehicles and advanced equipment to state and UT forensic labs.
Mizoram has received Rs. 6.13 crore for 15 sets of modern forensic instruments in addition to the vehicles.
