Aizawl: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has urged the Central government to provide immediate relief to those affected by floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Mizoram.
In a statement, the party said it received reports from its Mizoram unit that the state’s residents are enduring severe hardships due to the ongoing calamities.
“In this time of disaster, we demand that the Government of India awaken its conscience, and provide immediate support and relief to the people of Mizoram,” it said.
As per reports, the incidents of landslides, floods, house collapse and other calamities triggered by torrential rain for the past few days in Mizoram have so far killed five people, including three Myanmar refugees.
According to the latest data released by the state’s disaster management and rehabilitation department, 675 landslides have been reported and 269 houses collapsed or were damaged in different parts of the state since May 24.
East Mizoram’s Champhai district recorded the highest number of landslides at 210, followed by Serchhip district (137) and Khawzawl district (92), it said.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday (June 2, 2025) urged the Centre to release more funds in northeastern states to deal with the flood situation.
In a social media post, Kharge said he hoped PM Modi would open the floodgates of his PM CARES Fund. He also recalled the BJP’s promise of making Assam flood-free.
“In 2016, BJP had promised to make a ‘Flood-Free’ Assam. In 2022, Home Minister Amit Shah repeated this promise. Looking at the visuals from the so-called ‘SMART CITY’ Guwahati, one is reminded how Modi ji and his double engine governments have betrayed Assam,” Kharge said in a post on X.
